Fun Football for age 3-4 years

Shooting Stars is the first stage of Waterside Karori’s football pathway for girls and boys aged 3-4 (or 5 if not ready for U6). It is about having fun, making friends, and learning new skills.

At this age your young footballer might need assistance from a parent during sessions. Or they might be fine on their own! It may also differ from week to week. Sometimes it can take a while before the training wheels come off – but with perseverance it will happen! For spectators we ask you to stand out of the way to give the kids room to run!
As your child gets older, and with more ball time under their belt, they will become more comfortable during sessions and develop their skills. This will mean there is a bit of a difference between players’ ability. That’s ok – just go at your own pace!
Sessions are around 40 mins long. The structure is to start in a group with a ball each, warming up and practicing some ball manipulation. Fun activities will follow focused on individual skills development. Coaches are unable to always give players individual attention, but just shout out to a coach if you are giving parental assistance and need some help.
We finish each session with a game for the more confident players. Not all players are keen to join the game, or some start the game but don’t finish- that’s ok.
We may split some drills and the game into two groups according to confidence.
Terms run throughout the year, with Term 1 and 4 on Terawhiti Turf (Makara Road or park bridge access) and Term 2 and 3 on grass (KP).
What does a Shooting Star need? Football boots are recommended, mainly for grip in the winter morning grass. These can be hard to source, but Rebel sport usually has boots available for smaller feet. There is also a boot bank in the clubrooms. Please ensure you bring a water bottle to keep your little one hydrated, and a pair of gloves is recommended when it gets really cold.
If the weather is not playing ball, we will cancel the session in line with the other foundation football grades (communicated via email on the morning) . We understand that at other times it may be just too cold, and you want to opt out. The clubrooms café is a nice place to have a hot drink instead!
The meeting point will be given depending on where the park session is. Also, where adults can maybe stand. Parking wise an option (other than the main carparks) could be Fernlea Ave/Tringham St or the carpark off Sunshine Ave at the north, or for the Turf the carpark off Makara Road.
